This morning I booted up my machine and plugged in my ‘trusty’ 2.5 Portable USB Hard Drive, containing some work, music and a few photos from the last year or or so. The drive is less than a year old.

I was greeted with the ‘click-of-death’. You know, the sound where you know, your drive is dead, and everything you have on there will be inevitably inaccessible. That means, maybe a year of my life might disappear into mashed up 1’s and 0’s.

So, i’m in shock. By the way it’s a Toshiba. All I can say is, don’t buy Toshiba.

This makes me a little concerned. Can anyone ever be so sure as to no matter how many backups you have, that all of them could actually fail in the end? Nothing lasts forever…

I’m a bit bored (theres not much work flying around) so I thought i’d give you all a snippit of my, well, browsing platform and extensions.

PortableFirefox
Basically it’s a version of Firefox you can move around on a USB Drive/Stick/Pen etc. So, your browser goes where you go! And everything with it, including extensions, bookmarks etc, you name it. Great eh?

Basically, I needed this because my work computer is administrator locked, which means i’m a guppy with no rights. I can’t even install fonts. Stupid eh? I wasn’t able to apply any themes, extensions or anything and this was the perfect solution.

Google Browser Sync
A very, very wicked extension for Firefox is the new concoction from Google Labs called Google Browser Sync. This little beauty will synchronize your browser settings on any version of Firefox with the extension installed. Bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords.

If you’re worried about security, it’s all integrated with your Google account, so if you have a Gmail account you’ll be fine

The coolest thing about this extension is, it sort of remembers your opened tabs when opening and closing Firefox. This morning, Firefox crashed (I was sifting through some sites for the Daily Catch) and had maybe, 20-30 tabs open. Browser Sync managed to reopen all the tabs which were open, saving me over an hour of browsing for you fellas!

So, check out Google Browser Sync here. If you have problems to install it (outside of the US) you’ll have to find a US proxy server and install it that way.
